This post originally was published on Feb. 14, 2011.  I knew it would be the last Valentine’s Day I would spend with my father.  As I read over what I wrote a year ago…I can tell you that it was true to heart…I did what I said I would do and I would do it again.  For my parents now – thank you for loving me and making my life so happy.

It’s such a beautiful morning here in the Mitten State.   38 degrees, gray skies and a bit of wind blowing through the treetops.

I was thinking about love and Valentine’s Day last night, and I think I came to the conclusion that this is a holiday…just to make someone feel special.

Plain and simple.

This year….I’m focussing on my parents…making them feel special.  They are the first people who I fell in love with…and they are the people who I have loved the longest.

Thank you Mom and Dad!

Here’s your Valentine….from Gretchen

I’ve been to a few weddings in my day…and I’ll say that I’m so thankful to have had a ceremony that we both created, with an incredible Officiant, in a beautiful natural cathedral.

The cathedral was my Brother’s home, a log house that I spoke of in my earlier post. As the sun went down and people began to arrive, I was ready to meet my new husband. My niece Emily acted as my Maid of Honor and helped me prepare.  We laughed and cried a little, wishing that her sister was with us.

There isn’t much to say, that I can’t say with the pictures from the wedding ceremony, taken by my friend Dawn.  I do wish that I would have allowed my Sweetheart’s youngest son into my dressing room, as he requested.  Looking back now it would have been one of those moments between us forever, but the hug he gave me afterward said a million words.

The past months have gone by so quickly.  I’ve had some people say that I’ve been oddly quiet…and yes, there was a reason.

It was in November that my Sweetheart and I decided to make it official and get hitched.  It was something that we knew we would do eventually, but a Christmas wedding became even more attractive this year. With the huge amount of sadness that we’ve encountered in the past year and with my own uncontrollable path given to me, we couldn’t think of a better time to celebrate our commitment to each other.  I realize that I’m very lucky to have a man in my life that loves me that much.

Why I was quiet…

We told our families…almost everyone, except for his 12 and 14-year-old sons.  After discussing how his ex-wife handles news and surprises, it was agreed that she didn’t need to be privy to our special event.  It was going to be about US…and my Sweetheart’s boys becoming a family.  I found it funny, because being a “Step-mother” was something his ex would give me a hard time about….She and I are  two very different people. Which is a completely different story…for another post *cringe*.

I probably will never understand her, but the one thing I will say about this subject is that, if I had another woman who I knew would not harm my children by putting them in danger, someone who came from a prominent community member family, who is well spoken and educated (I’m tooting my own horn, lol..I mean, it’s not like I’m a crack addict or loser)…and was willing to love my snotty nosed, snively kids, I’d thank God and be appreciative…not drive the woman away and make myself look like a hysterical lunatic. That’s just me though, handling things a little more level-headed and classy….end of that story for now.  When people are scared, they just do weird things.

So, we worked her out of the picture…I blocked anyone and everyone that had contact with her and the boys on FB, I didn’t tweet, or blog about the upcoming nuptials and everyone that knew any information was sworn to secrecy.  Everyone who cared about us, respected our wishes ….and it all came together perfectly.

Applying for the Marriage License…

I went to the county courthouse…and I felt like a celebrity.  I walked in to pick up the license and was met with hugs and greetings.  My childhood family friend is the County Clerk and I respect her with everything I have…and then my childhood classmate’s mother also works as a Deputy Clerk…and I just adore that lady! They both had nothing but loving comments about my father and my upcoming marriage.

As I stepped away, I looked behind at the counter…there were 4 other people who were there before me…still standing there and I’m sure wondering “Who the hell is that?” It made me laugh and I apologized to them quietly in my head.

Older & Wiser…

The days leading up to the wedding were interesting.  I make it no secret that I have become wise and we both agreed that a pre-nup was to be in place before the marriage. Of course, it came down to the day of the wedding when it was signed.  No problem.  A smart couple at our age should consider a pre-nup…no matter how “forever” you think you will be…along with a life insurance policy.  It’s a good feeling to know that the one’s I love will be able to take care of things after I have departed this Earth.

The Log Home built with Love…

Now, the two days before the wedding were busy and I spent many hours at my brothers and sister-in-laws beautiful log home.  They built the home ten years ago, from logs cut out of the Georgian Bay area of Canada.  The house is absolutely gorgeous and with the Holiday decorations, it was warm and comforting for the wedding.

Yellow River Wedding Chapel Awaits….

This was the second wedding held at their house, my niece had been married there in 2009.  Amazingly, the two weddings were completely different in style, but both beautiful…if I do say so myself.

With cookies and cupcakes made, ice luminaries created, my bouquet made by my sister and the garland and lights all hung perfectly….we were ready to have a candle-light wedding.

“Let Me Tell Ya”: Our Industry Loses a Valued Member by John Schmitt, CWD/PPI October 1, 2011

Harry Brown, MGWC, 1933–2011
The ground water industry lost one of its finest members with the death of Harry Brown, MGWC, at age 77 on Aug. 7, 2011. Harry had waged a courageous battle with cancer and other afflictions over the past few years. We understand that he passed on with his loving family nearby and in relative comfort.
Harry Brown was born in Osceola Town-ship, Mich., near the town of Howell on Dec. 21, 1933. He was the son of Ronald Brown and Helen Browning-Brown. Ronald Brown himself was a water well driller. Harry graduated from Hartland High School in 1952, and, in 1953, married Ingrid Hasenbusch, who was from Howell. Harry then served a two-year hitch in the
U.S. Army, stationed in Germany, and, upon returning, became associated with Brown Drilling Co., started by his father and uncle in 1927. Shortly after his return, he purchased Brown Drilling Co., operating since then from a Howell address.
Under Harry’s leadership, Brown Drilling Co. became one of the larger drilling contractors in the state of Michigan. The company has drilled wells of all sizes and types – many domestic wells, a large number of commercial wells for motels and other establishments, and a number of really high-capacity industrial wells for irrigation, hospitals and municipalities. Harry had experience drilling almost every type of water well drilling method – jetting, hollow-rod, cable-tool, mud rotary, air rotary, casing hammer, down-the-hole hammer, auger and other methods. He had drilled wells from as small as 2 inches (yes, there still are quite a few 2-in. wells in Michigan, and they work very well) up to and including 24-inch wells. Brown Drilling also installs and repairs pumps of all types, from domestic jet pumps and submersibles up through large lineshaft-types used for irrigation and municipal water supply. The company also provides water-conditioning equipment, and has built a number of large pump houses for various uses.
Perhaps the largest and most successful well Brown Drilling ever completed was done near Brighton, Mich., a few years ago; it was started with a 24-inch casing, and completed with 60 feet of screen in sand and gravel. This writer was privileged to see that well test-pumped, and it was being done at a rate of 6,000 gpm. This was an awesome sight, with two 14-inch discharge pipes from a large lineshaft-type pump driven by a Detroit Diesel. The twin 14-inch pipes were equipped with circular orifice plates, and the 10-inch to 12-inch streams of water exited six feet aboveground, and hit the ground some 60 feet away. After a successful test pumping, the hydrogeologist on the job determined that the well’s real capacity was more like 10,000 gpm, but the pumping was limited to 6,000, due to the pump capacity. Originally intended for a subdivision, this well was sold by the owner to the local township for a municipal supply.
In the mid 1950s, Harry joined the then Michigan Well Drillers Association (MWDA), today known as the Michigan Ground Water Association (MGWA). He had remained a member to his death, and, in fact, was a lifetime member on that occasion. He served a couple stints on the MWDA board, including serving as board secretary and other offices. He was named Well Driller of the Year – the highest MWDA award – during the 1990s. He attended many, many MWDA/MGWA conventions, and enjoyed the educational seminars, business meetings and exhibits. He enjoyed visiting with other drillers and the exchange of ideas when these fellows got together.
Shortly after joining the MWDA, Harry joined the then National Water Well Association, now known as the National Ground Water Association (NGWA). When this group introduced its driller certification, Harry became a master ground water contractor, and maintained that designation to his death. He was very proud of being a master ground water contractor, and attended a whole bunch of NGWA conventions, where he enjoyed the educational events, exhibits and exchange of ideas, just like he did at the Michigan shows.
In the 1970s, Harry worked as a consultant in the United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Saudi Arabia and West African countries, including Upper Volta. He told this writer that operating a drilling project in Africa was “an interesting experience.”
In addition to his drilling activities, Harry was a backpacker, camper, gentlemen farmer, sportsman, sports fan, gardener, hunter, fisherman and pilot. He especially loved Isle Royale National Park on Lake Superior, where there are absolutely no vehicles, and backpacking by foot power is the only way to get around. He was a guest of this writer at numerous University of Michigan football games, and we, along with our wives, attended the 1989 Rose Bowl game whereby, miracles of miracles, Michigan beat USC 22-14. He was an experienced traveler, and enjoyed several trips to Germany, the birth country of his wife, Ingrid.
In addition to Ingrid, Harry is survived by his daughters, Darlene Coghill and Linda Brown, and son Stanley Brown, who has managed Brown Drilling Co. for the last several years, and his wife, Kimberly. He also is survived by two beloved granddaughters, Emily Coghill of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Carolyn Coghill-Schyck and her husband Paul of Manhattan, Kan.; as well as his sister Dorothy Bourassa and brother Richard Brown.
Harry’s life was memorialized with a visitation at MacDonald Funeral Home in Howell, Mich., on Aug. 14. His funeral, with a crowd of about 300 present, was held at Waldenwoods near Hartland, Mich., on Monday, Aug. 15. This event took place outdoors on the shores of a pretty lake, and Harry would have loved it, having worked at that facility when he was a teenager. His daughter Linda delivered a beautiful eulogy, and this writer added some short remarks about Harry’s life and career.
As you probably have figured out by now, Harry was a close and dear friend of this writer, and will be greatly missed. All his friends offer their deepest sympathies to Ingrid and his other survivors. The world seems a little colder place that he is no longer walking in it with us.

Mom has a nice rack and red nose now! lol

Everyone asks me how my MommaCakes is doing now that it’s been 4 months since the love of her life passed. She has her good days and her bad, just like anyone would. Her schedule is busy taking my SisterCrash to PT and going to her own chemo appointments. MommaCakes cancer, Multiple Myeloma, is holding steady. It’s not in remission, but it’s not advancing.
I’ve been working hard to keep her positive and happy. The other day while shopping at Meijers I saw the perfect gift for her. My PappaCakes would never let us do this to his car, but I put these on the Suburban…and everyone laughed. It makes people smile.

The Holiday Season Has Arrived

December has really began with a bang!  Not only did my hubby-to-be bring home 3 deer during Michigan’s gun season, but so did my future step-son.  I’m not big on deer, being that I’m allergic to them and I think they are pets…but, the venison meat in the freezer is very much welcomed.

Indoor Classes

Since Thanksgiving I’ve been busy helping Santa order Hovie SUPs for under a few Christmas Trees.  I’ve also been busy teaching at the Howell Area Aquatic Center’s pool.  Everyone finds their inner Hawaiian as soon as they step on liquid.

Paddle the Mitten’s T’s have also been a big hit for stocking stuffers! If you would like to order a PTM shirt – please contact me at linda95010@gmail.com.

Men and Women's PTM T's $20-$24

Doxie Diva - Gretchen

Aside from my SUP business, I’ve been having some fun with the wiener dogs…. Gretchen has become my little wiener girl diva..

and Kraut has been fitted for his first Personal Floataton Device!

He is a fatty and seems to always fall into the water!

Kraut PFD, cabelas.com

And talking about falling in the water – I also recieved my Waterproof iPhone Case.

These cases are built for other phones also!

The case is $35 and I plan to be selling these this next year.  If you are interested in purchasing one of these, let me know linda95010@gmail.com and we will get you set up!

I’ve also created a few wreath’s for people. One order in particular I was happy to make.  A male friend of mine asked for one for his Mother. He wanted it to be purple to comemorate his brother that was lost in an accident a few years ago.  Of course, I was happy to do this.

It is the Holiday Season to help people, please remember that there are people who are not as fortunate as you.  There are homeless, families without food, people who are struggling with terminal illnesses and ones who suffer from depression.

PappaCakes Pic - Remembering Cancer patients may need help during this holiday season.

Please remember the older folks that may need help just to get thru the day.  Pay it forward, Positive Community Actions, Be Kind…whatever you call it….instead of thinking about helping…DO IT!
